Thermal (Heat) Burns (from boiling water or oil, hot stoves or radiators, etc.)

Signs/symptoms

1. Animal is usually licking the area excessively.
2. Area is very red and inflamed.
3. Area is usually sensitive to the touch.
4. If there is a second or third degree burn (blisters, full or partial loss of skin), the area may be bleeding.

Treatment

1. Apply cold water (if possible) to the burned area immediately, followed by an instant cold compress for the first 30 minutes.
2. Then apply aloe vera cream/ointment or triple antibiotic ointment to the area on a nonstick sterile pad, leaving the nonstick sterile pad covering the area
(If no triple antibiotic ointment is available, use petroleum jelly).

WARNING: Do not apply aloe vera cream or any ointment ot second or third degree burns (where blisters form)

4. Wrap lightly (not too tightly) with gauze roll bandage.
5. Secure with adhesive tape-placing the tape over the gauze roll itself, not onto the animal's skin or hair.
6. Seek immediate veterinary care.
