Chemical Burns

Signs/symptoms:

1. Animal is usually licking the area excessively.
2. Area is very red and inflamed.
3. Area is sensitive to the touch.
4. If there is a second or third degree burn (blisters, full or partial loss of skin), the area may be bleeding.

Treatment:

1. Flush the area of exposure with large amounts of tepid water.
2. Discourage the animal from licking or scratching itself.
3. Clip the hair from the area using blunt-tipped curved scissors.
4. Cover the area with gauze dressing pads.
5. Wrap lightly (not too tightly) with a gauze roll bandage.
6. Secure the wrap with adhesive tape-placing the tape over the gauze roll bandage itself, no onto the animal's skin or hair.
